My Favorite Things Follow the Pumpkin Lined Road - 9 x 12 Watercolor Follow the Pumpkin Lined Road - 9 x 12 Watercolor So here we are in my favorite month of the year. If I had a wish to make, I'd ask for it to be October for 6 months straight! I think many of you may know the song Julie Andrews sang in the movie The Sound of Music called My Favorite Things. Well, when I was working on some Halloween projects, the melody came to mind and I penned the following poem to that melody. If you can recall it, sing it to that melody while you read. (If not, just Google 'song My Favorite Things' and it'll take you to a YouTube page where you can here her sing) Shall we do it together? Here we go. . . Pumpkins and broomsticks black cats with their Witches, Cauldrons and Ravens crows on spooky branches, Dark clouds surround the full moon like a claw, Skulls with their bones and the ghosts Oh so tall! Black candles with red flames black hats pointed so sharp, Ghouls and ghosts floating that glow in the black dark, Kids in their costumes chanting loud Trick or Treats, These are a few of my favorite things! Orange and black lights on bushes and windows, Carved pumpkins on doorsteps wicked smiles all aglow, Haunting the air feels with magical beings, These are a few of my favorite things! When the crow caws, when the owls screech, when the days are shorter than nights, I know it's that time of the year called October and then soon will be. . . All Hallows Eve!! _____ The Halloween Bird Halloween bird Baltimore Oriel 9x12 soft pastel Halloween bird - Baltimore Oriel 9x12 soft pastel On Instagram I read where a little boy saw a Baltimore Oriel and said "look mommy, a Halloween bird!". And I thought, wow, how cool. So here he is! Oriels stay around in the eastern and central areas then start to leave as early as July for wintering grounds in Florida, the Caribbean, Central America and the northern tip of South America. They definitely are a beautiful bird as is their song. We've seen them here in our area and when not visible, I can always pick out their song and know they are around. _____ Halloween Journals Journal Hard Cover Journal front Cover - hard bound Journal Back cover Journal Back cover - hard bound sample pages sample pages sample pages sample pages sample pages sample pages sample pages sample pages Journal soft cover Journal soft cover opening page opening page - pen holder on inside cover During the month of October I love to work on Halloween themed creative projects. The above embellished Journals are a favorite of mine to work on. It's a nice diversion from painting and I make them in many different themes. Nature, Christmas, Vintage, Winter, just to name a few. The hard bound journals hold more pages and take more time to make. The soft journal covers have less pages and are quicker to complete. I have many covers completed, just sitting until their turn comes to embellish the pages with all kinds of goodies from writing cards to decorating pages just for the sake of decoration. There are also plenty of blank specialty papers to journal on in each journal. So far I've been making them mostly for my own private collection because I really hate to part with them! So far anyway. Just thought to share another piece of my creativity with you. Especially the Halloween creations! _____ 3x3 oil on stretched canvas 3x3 oil on stretched canvas And what would my Halloween projects be without adding at least one crow to the group. Small but mighty these small miniature paintings can be. A spooky enough tree with the bird of magic on its branch is a perfect setting for a Halloween scene. And now to move on to the more mundane time slot when I went to the Arboretum to paint and also a few other miniatures to share. Like all things must pass, so will October. :( _____ Other Favorite Things. . . As I drove to the West side of the park, the field of gold (above) came into view. I've painted there many times, including in winter, but it was the first time I saw it in bloom, so I hit right on choosing that day to go there. It was too sunny and crowded with people stopping to catch the scene with photos so I found a quiet place further back to enjoy the solitude and do what I love . . . paint. I hope you enjoyed the myriad of pieces I created this month as much as I enjoy sharing them with you. This is a real place known at St. James Cemetery in Palos Hills and it really is known to be haunted. I've painted there several times, including once on Halloween (during the day of course :) ! May you have a haunting Halloween time this year and enjoy all things Pumpkin flavored, as I do!
